Chennai (formerly known as Madras) is the capital city of Tamil
Nadu, the southern east state of India. The city of Chennai was founded in 1639
by Francis Day of the British East India Company. The French and then the
British controlled the city before it became the capital of the Madras
Presidency in the 19th century.
The city is known for its cultural heritage and temple
architecture. It is also a growing commercial and industrial centre. George
Town is one of the oldest parts of the city where most of the bazaars and
restaurants are located. At Anna Salai (formerly called Mount Road), you can
find the major banks, airline offices, bookshops, tourist offices, restaurants,
and high-class hotels. The 12-kilometre long Marina Beach along the east coast,
is one of the longest beaches in the world.
