FULBRIGHT-HAYS DOCTORAL DISSERTATION RESEARCH ABROAD PROGRAM The program was initiated to contribute to the development and improvement of the study of modern foreign languages and area studies in the United States by providing opportunities for scholars to conduct research abroad. This program also provides grants to colleges and universities to fund individual doctoral students to conduct research in other countries in modern foreign languages and area studies. Please note that proposals focusing on Western Europe are not eligible.
Duration: Six to twelve months
Eligibility:
Graduate student in good standing at an institution of higher education who, when the fellowship period begins, is admitted to candidacy in a doctoral degree program in modern foreign languages and area studies at that institution Planning a teaching career in the United States upon graduation Possesses adequate skills in the language(s) necessary to carry out the dissertation research project Procedure To Apply: Graduate students must apply through the institutions in which they are enrolled in doctoral programs in the fields of foreign languages and area studies. Grant Benefits: (provided directly by the U.S. Department of Education)
Maintenance allowance for the fellow and his/her dependents Project allowance for research related expenses such as books, tuition and affiliation fee, local travel and other incidental expenses etc. Health and accident insurance premium $100.00 administrative fee to applicant institution A fellow shall:
Devote full time to research on the approved topic. Not engage in any gainful employment during the fellowship period. Remain a student in good standing at his or her institution.
