PRE-DOCTORAL STUDENTS AND GRADUATING SENIORS
 
 
USIEF welcomes students from the U.S. to participate in the Fulbright experience in India. Pre-doctoral students about 15-18 awards for up to nine months are awarded.
 
Fields of Study:

Preferred areas of study are science and technology, environmental sciences, agricultural sciences, public health, communications and business administration.

Eligibility:
  • Applicants must hold a B.A. degree or equivalent before the beginning date of the grant.
  • In the creative and performing arts, four years of professional study and/or experience meets the basic eligibility requirement.
Academic Year:
 
July through April. Grantees are expected to arrive in India during the second half of August for attendance at an orientation conference in Delhi.
 
Grant Benefits:
  • Maintenance allowance Rs. 40,000 per month (Additional Rs. 5000 is provided as high cost city allowance for students affiliated in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore and Hyderabad)
  • Dependent allowance Rs. 7,500 per month up to a maximum of one dependent. Please note that dependent allowance is given only if the dependent stays for a minimum of 80% of the scholar's time in India.
  • Round-trip travel according to USIEF guidelines for grantee only
  • Health insurance for grantee only  
  • Research allowance of $500
  • Excess baggage allowance of $500

Note:

Research in the following areas is not permitted: (1) relating to border areas, tribal areas, and other sensitive areas; (2) sensitive political or religious (communal themes); (3) States which are politically sensitive. Special permits for research in most Northeastern hill areas may require more time than the usual period of 3-4 months.

Affiliation:
 
According to the Government of India guidelines, the scholar will be affiliated with an Indian institution of higher learning for carrying out the proposed study/research work and will be guided/assisted by an academic supervisor nominated by the head of the affiliating institution.
