Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program

FULBRIGHT TEACHER EXCHANGE PROGRAM (SECONDARY SCHOOL)

The Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program provide opportunities to U.S. secondary school teachers (9th to 12th grades) of English, Math, or Science to participate in direct exchange of positions with Indian teachers for the semester beginning August/September 2008. U.S. teachers selected for this exchange will have the opportunity to work within an Indian school system and gain familiarity with the Indian society and culture. Similarly Indian teachers will work in an U.S. school and share their expertise. The experience has benefited both U.S. and Indian teachers and the community at large.

Benefits to Teachers:
  • Increased understanding of the Indian education system and academic fields.
  • An opportunity for a career-enhancing experience and be exposed to new teaching methods.
  • An opportunity to develop lifelong friendship and professional relationships and become a member of the Fulbright fraternity.
Benefits to U.S. Schools:
  • Increased knowledge and interaction between professional colleagues and Indian exchange teachers.
  • Increased global awareness for students taught by Indian teachers and returned Fulbrighters.
  • Development of a professional relationship between the two participating schools.
Benefits for Communities:
  • Presence of an Indian teacher and his or her family, providing the opportunity to the whole community to learn of another nation.
  • An opportunity to increase awareness through diverse ideas, values, worldview and different ways of life.
Duration of the Grant: One semester (August-December 2008) Eligibility:
  • U.S. citizen holding a U.S. passport.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Holding at least a Bachelor's degree.
  • Has a current full-time teaching or administrative assignment in the U.S. or one of its territories.
  • Is in at least the third year of full-time teaching or administration.
  • Has not participated in a Fulbright Teacher Exchange longer than eight weeks in the past five years.
Grant Benefits:
  • The terms of the award for teacher and administrator assignments vary from country to country and are described in detail in the 2007-2008 Country Index and Administrator Exchanges sections on the Fulbright website.
  • In general, exchange teachers are granted a leave of absence with pay and benefits and use their regular salary to cover daily expenses while abroad.
  • Maintenance allowances paid in the currency of the host country, based on the cost of living in that country, not on the amount of the grantee's U.S. salary. All teachers should investigate the cost of living for themselves and any accompanying family members in the proposed country of assignment.
  • Full or partial transportation awards for the teacher, depending on the country program.
  • Orientation costs, including one-way travel to orientation for the exchange teacher only, while food and lodging for teachers and dependents during orientation will be paid by the United States Department of State.
  • Modest supplemental health insurance coverage.
However, passport and visa fees are the responsibility of the applicant.
